Fake Fur - Epoxy Putty - Justin Deprisco
Introduction: When I started this custom of Teddy from the movie "A.I., Artificial Intelligence", I was just going to paint zigzag lines to represent fur. Because I wanted more depth I thought about using Sculpey but decided instead to use Epoxy Putty. I'm very happy with the result... | | Tools Needed: Epoxy Putty and a small wad of aluminum foil. (And Sandpaper--not pictured) | | First prepare the surface by sanding gently. | | Step 1: Apply the epoxy putty in small sections so you can work it before it sets. Be sure to press it firmly into place or else it will come loose during Step 2. | | Step 2: Using a wad of foil, press and shape the putty in a straight up and down motion. If the putty lifts off the surface work it around until it sticks. Of course, the amount of pressure you apply will vary your results. (Less Pressure = Rough Fur.... More Pressure = Smooth Fur) | | End Result: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until desired effect is reached. It is difficult to see in the picture, but I layered the putty on his face and belly to give him more bulk. To add details (such as I did around the mouth) use your preferred shaping tool and shape the putty IMMEDIATELY after you press it with the foil. Remember...it sets quickly! If you make a mistake, just cut it off and try again. | | Here's the final result, painted and with a close-up of the dry brushing (click image for larger photo). | | Final Comments: As I mentioned before, I wanted to use Sculpey; I didn't because it would be too brittle after hardening and any sharp peaks in the fur would break off. I've done hair and other textures with Sculpey before and this was definitely the easiest of them all. This was also my fastest customization...applying this texture to Teddy, start to finish, took me about 20 minutes and that's including breaks [I was watching TV:)] |
